Iliev Lab Design Chosen for Cell Host and Microbe Cover Again!

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT), the process of infusing fecal microbiota from a healthy donor into an unwell recipient's gastrointestinal tract to restore the healthy gut ecosystem, has shown promising therapeutic value for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). A diverse community of fungi coexists with the other members of the gut microbiota. In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Leonardi et al. (823–829) examine whether intestinal fungi influence FMT in UC, finding that high burdens of the gut fungus Candida prior to FMT associate with increased responsiveness to FMT. The cover image illustrates how FMT success, depicted as bacteria arriving (by train) in the patient's gut, is influenced by intestinal Candida (represented as the train controllers). Artwork by C.
